Sound familiar? A museum here, a concert there, and suddenly your Frankfurt weekend has got pretty expensive. Yet a surprising amount in this city costs 0 €. Or 1 €, if you catch the right Thursday.

Here's my overview: free museum days, the Städel for 10 €, stargazing in an observatory from 1908, organ music after work, university lectures on forensic medicine, and the corners of the city that cost nothing at all.

As of November 2026. I checked every time and price on the official pages of the museums, societies and the city, and I link each one. Special offers in particular change quickly – give the page a quick check before you go.

At a glance

  • Every Tuesday, 3–6 pm: the Städel for 10 € instead of 19 €, including all special exhibitions
  • Every Wednesday from 5 pm: the Senckenberg Natural History Museum for 6 € instead of 12 €
  • First Thursday of the month, 6–9 pm: the Goethe House and the German Romantic Museum for 1 €
  • First Friday of the month: the Schirn – two tickets for the price of one
  • Friday evenings: look through a telescope at the Physikalischer Verein's observatory, usually free
  • Last Saturday of the month: "Satourday" – the city museums are free for everyone
  • Always free: the Portikus, the Bundesbank Money Museum, the Stoltze-Museum, the Carmelite Monastery, the Exile Archive and the Paulskirche
  • Under 18? Then you get into all 16 city museums for free, every day

The free museum calendar

Satourday: free on the last Saturday of every month

This is the tip a lot of people in Frankfurt don't know: on the last Saturday of the month, the city museums are free – for everyone, not just families. The day takes its name from the family programme the museums run on ten Saturdays a year (workshops and tours, mostly with registration). In August, Satourday moves to the second-to-last Saturday because of the Museumsuferfest.

The next dates:

  • Saturday, 28 November 2026 – theme "Licht und Schatten" (light and shadow), with workshops at the DAM, the Archäologisches Museum and the Museum Giersch, among others
  • Saturday, 26 December 2026 – Boxing Day, a public holiday. There's no family programme, but entry is still free. Most museums run holiday hours, so check before you go.
  • Saturday, 30 January 2027 – that's what the rule gives; the 2027 programme hasn't been published yet

Free for everyone:

  • Archäologisches Museum (archaeology)
  • Caricatura Museum
  • Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM)
  • Dommuseum (cathedral museum, open again from 19 November)
  • Historisches Museum (city history)
  • Ikonenmuseum (icons)
  • Jüdisches Museum and Museum Judengasse
  • Junges Museum (for children)
  • Museum Angewandte Kunst (applied arts)
  • MMK: Zollamt and Tower – the main building on Domstraße is closed for renovation until early 2027
  • Weltkulturen Museum – the main building is closed until spring 2027; the Weltkulturen Labor is always free anyway (more below)

Free for children and teenagers under 18 only: the Museum für Kommunikation and the Museum Giersch.

Not taking part: the Städel, Schirn, Liebieghaus, Senckenberg and the Film Museum (DFF). For the Städel, Schirn and Senckenberg there are the discount days below instead.

For nerds: observatory, lectures & the stock exchange

The Physikalischer Verein and its observatory

The Physikalischer Verein is one of the coolest insider tips in town. Frankfurt citizens founded it in 1824. Philipp Reis demonstrated his "Telephon" here in 1861, the famous Stern–Gerlach experiment took place here in 1922, and in 1914 the society was one of the founding donors of Goethe University. Its domed observatory dates from 1908 – and on Friday evenings you can look through the telescope.

Sternwarte des Physikalischen Vereins (Westend) — Senckenberganlage 23, 60325 Frankfurt.Public observing evenings at the historic 1908 refractor, good for the Moon and the planets, plus a solar telescope. Volunteers explain what you're looking at.

  • When: Fridays 6–10 pm and some Saturdays 7–10 pm. The next dates: Friday 13, 20 and 27 November, 4 and 11 December, and Saturday 14 November and 12 December. There's a break during the winter and summer school holidays.
  • Price: the society says entry to tours of the observatory is "oft kostenfrei" (often free) – the observing evenings list no price. You usually don't need to register, but it helps the team plan.
  • Good to know: you can drop in at any point during the evening. When it's cloudy you get explanations instead of stars, and in rain the observatory may close at short notice. You go in through the "Turmeingang" (tower entrance); stairs and a lift lead up, and the dome isn't step-free. Recommended from age 8.
  • Official info: physikalischer-verein.de

Lectures at the Physikalischer Verein (Westend) — Robert-Mayer-Straße 2, 60325 Frankfurt. The lectures take place in the society's lecture hall.

  • Free: "NaturWissenschaft und Technik" – 7:30 pm, no registration, also livestreamed. Next up: 18 November "Die Sprache der Viren" (the language of viruses), 2 December "Die Mathematik der Kommunikation" (the mathematics of communication), 16 December "Quanteninformation mit Licht" (quantum information with light), 21 January 2027 "Sicherheit in der modernen Kommunikation" (security in modern communication)
  • For 7 €: "Astronomie am Freitag" – every Friday at 8 pm, reduced 5 €. For example, the rings of Saturn on 4 December or "Der Stern von Bethlehem" (the Star of Bethlehem) on 11 December. Important: entry is from 7:30 to 8 pm, and after that the door is closed.
  • Special: on Monday, 23 November, cartoonist Katharina Greve gives a reading at the observatory (together with the Caricatura Museum), followed by telescope viewing. Free, but only with a ticket – the 6 pm reading has just 20 places.
  • Official info: physikalischer-verein.de

Pro tip: Fridays combine perfectly – the observatory from 6 pm, then the "Astronomie am Freitag" lecture at 8 pm. All talks are in German.

And on any other last Saturday of the month, the route works just the same – only without the bells and the mulled wine.
